5 Easy Steps to be Safer Online (Internet Safety Rules)

Cybersecurity is crucial for us all. Browsing the internet, or enjoying apps that connect to the internet can be fun and even necessary at times. Whether you’re playing a few rounds of candy crush or reading important emails, it's important to keep potential security threats in mind. Don't fret! We came up with some easy steps to help safeguard your internet experience. The devices we use, whether they’re home computers, smart phones, or tablets, all need the same level of security to protect against viruses, stolen information, and scams. These are just a few of the protocols we implement at Springwater Insurance Group, that could make the internet a safer place for you too.

  1. Create Strong Passwords: Utilize password keeping features that are already built into your devices. Then be sure to lock your devices with secure passcodes. Consider an additional password manager like Dashlane.

  2. Stop & Think: More often than not, an email or message written with a sense of urgency or catastrophe, is a scam. Especially from an unknown sender. Instead of clicking on a link or responding, reach out to the company by phone, or to a tech savvy family member to verify legitimacy. Never give out your bank account, social security, or medicare information.

  3. Install Security Software: Use a reliable source and keep it updated. Pop-up ads or emails promoting software may be harmful scams, so it’s best to use a reliable product. Consider reaching out to your local computer specialist for recommendations.

  4. Log Out of Accounts: Be sure to fully log out of your accounts after using them. This could be apps or websites.

  5. Be Aware of What You Share: Just like we mentioned earlier, be very wary of who you’re sharing important information with both online and even over the phone. When in doubt, STOP before you share, and ask for assistance from someone you trust who understands online security. Consider this in apps like Facebook and adjust your privacy settings to limit who can see your information.
